To Diy Or Not To Diy, That Is The Question

Dear Reader,

Hannover Messe is approaching fast, and many of us are getting ready to visit again. This year the venue will be hosting no less than 12 international trade shows, and they promise to feature “the best in modern technology”. Topping the agenda of the 2007 event are industrial automation, power transmission and control, energy technologies, industrial subcontracting and services. For those of us who are interested in nanotechnology and bionics there are also plenty of interesting things going on!

As usual, most of our team abandons our office in Antwerp to go to the Hannover Messe, and if you want to meet us you will find our stand in hall 8. The stand number is C33. We will be looking forward to seeing you there.

The featured Partner Country at this year's Hannover Messe is Turkey. Our editorial team has also been focusing on the country bridging Europe and Asia: in the latest IEN you can find a special country focus . Read on the products of Turkish manufacturers, and check out how HP Pelzer Pimsa cuts unexpected down-time with help from a conditioning monitoring product from Artesis.

In this newsletter you can also read David Greensmith in Baldor's article on simpler motion with Ethernet Powerlink. Product manager Markus Bregulla in Turck writes on Banner Engineering's light-based safety solution and Philip Shardlow in Omron Industrial Automation explains what recent developments in the area of safety control should mean for manufacturers facing the challenge of building integrateable, flexible safety systems.

In addition, we have an article from the Russian manufacturer Fastwel on the new challenges, new opportunities and new frontiers posed by PC/104 CPU boards, and an article on industry LCDs taking off. To top it all off, our newsletter exclusive is an article explaining how safety engineering integrated in the system not only permits simple automation structures and reduces the risk of secondary damages, but also improves the productivity.

Industry News

Nanotech at Hannover Messe
More than 50 experts from twelve nations will deal with the continuing trend topic micro- and nanotechnology at the forum “Innovations for Industry” during the Hannover Messe. Prof. Ahmet Öztarhan from Ege University in Izmir will present applications of micro and nano-technology from Turkey, this year' s partner country of Hannover Messe. Louis Ross from the US company Virtus Advanced Sensors will speak about the commercialisation of multi-axis inertial sensors for consumer electronic devices. Development chances for sensors will also be highlighted by Masao Kubo from the Japanese company Matsushita Electric Works. Other speakers include Junji Adachi (Micromachine Center, Tokyo), Prof. Masayoshi Esashi (Tohoku University), Mikko Saikkonen (Beneq Oy) and Markku Tili (Okmetic Oy).

    1. HYDRAULICS FACILITATE REPAIRS ON 12.000 TON ROOF
The day after the Milwaukee Brewers finished their final game of the season at Miller Park in September 2006, a different team went into action. This time the coaches were engineers, and the first-string players were millwrights, ironworkers, operating engineers, and laborers. The task for which they had been preparing was a major repair job on the stadium's movable roof. Enerpac hydraulics...
