Dear Reader, Hannover Messe is approaching fast, and many of us are getting ready to visit again. This year the venue will be hosting no less than 12 international trade shows, and they promise to feature “the best in modern technology”. Topping the agenda of the 2007 event are industrial automation, power transmission and control, energy technologies, industrial subcontracting and services. For those of us who are interested in nanotechnology and bionics there are also plenty of interesting things going on!
As usual, most of our team abandons our office in Antwerp to go to the Hannover Messe, and if you want to meet us you will find our stand in hall 8. The stand number is C33. We will be looking forward to seeing you there.
The featured Partner Country at this year's Hannover Messe is Turkey. Our editorial team has also been focusing on the country bridging Europe and Asia: in the latest IEN you can find a special country focus . Read on the products of Turkish manufacturers, and check out how HP Pelzer Pimsa cuts unexpected down-time with help from a conditioning monitoring product from Artesis.
In this newsletter you can also read David Greensmith in Baldor's article on simpler motion with Ethernet Powerlink. Product manager Markus Bregulla in Turck writes on Banner Engineering's light-based safety solution and Philip Shardlow in Omron Industrial Automation explains what recent developments in the area of safety control should mean for manufacturers facing the challenge of building integrateable, flexible safety systems.
In addition, we have an article from the Russian manufacturer Fastwel on the new challenges, new opportunities and new frontiers posed by PC/104 CPU boards, and an article on industry LCDs taking off. To top it all off, our newsletter exclusive is an article explaining how safety engineering integrated in the system not only permits simple automation structures and reduces the risk of secondary damages, but also improves the productivity. |

Nanotech at Hannover Messe
More than 50 experts from twelve nations will deal with the continuing trend topic micro- and nanotechnology at the forum “Innovations for Industry” during the Hannover Messe. Prof. Ahmet Öztarhan from Ege University in Izmir will present applications of micro and nano-technology from Turkey, this year' s partner country of Hannover Messe. Louis Ross from the US company Virtus Advanced Sensors will speak about the commercialisation of multi-axis inertial sensors for consumer electronic devices. Development chances for sensors will also be highlighted by Masao Kubo from the Japanese company Matsushita Electric Works. Other speakers include Junji Adachi (Micromachine Center, Tokyo), Prof. Masayoshi Esashi (Tohoku University), Mikko Saikkonen (Beneq Oy) and Markku Tili (Okmetic Oy).

Technology in Action
1. HYDRAULICS FACILITATE REPAIRS ON 12.000 TON ROOF
The day after the Milwaukee Brewers finished their final game of the season at Miller Park in September 2006, a different team went into action. This time the coaches were engineers, and the first-string players were millwrights, ironworkers, operating engineers, and laborers. The task for which they had been preparing was a major repair job on the stadium's movable roof. Enerpac hydraulics...
2. VECTOR 2DS HELP IN MAINTAINING QUALITY
Two Vector 2D eddy current inspection instruments from GE Inspection Technologies, are helping Montupet to maintain the very high quality manufacturing standards involved in the production of aluminium cylinder heads at its Belfast factory. By using the Vector 2Ds to provide 100% inspection, Montupet is ensuring that it adheres to its rigorous quality policy to ensure long-term...
3. PUMP-ROLLERS DEVELOPMENT GIVES COST EFFECTIVENESS
Development work by Quadrant CMS, in close cooperation with Micropump Inc., has enabled the injection-moulding of pumps-rollers for a high volume application using Ertalyte TX PET-P. These parts were originally machined from extruded bar stock of the same material by Quadrant CMS' sister company Quadrant EPP, a specialist in this field. The change to a more cost-effective...
4. A COMPACT ATEX HOIST FOR ARKOPHARMA PLANT
Verlinde Technologies equips Arkopharma with a highly compact hoist certified ATEX against gaseous and dust-laden atmospheres, developed from the TIRLIFT range, with a hoisting capacity of 600kg. Arkopharma was seeking to replace its hoisting facility in order to evacuate the plant residues on leaving the press for manufacturing hypo-therapeutic products. The process...
5. MARS ROVERS KEEP ON GOING
When NASA's Spirit and Opportunity Mars exploration rovers successfully landed on the Red Planet in January 2004, it was hoped that each would keep going for about three months and would cover a distance of a few hundred metres. They are still going three years later. Each rover features 39 of maxon's motors. maxon had already provided the drive motors for the Sojourner rover...
6. CONVEYOR DESIGN – DOING THE RIGHT BELT CHOICE
Technical article : There are many factors and many choices for designers , production managers , and maintenance engineers to consider when designing a conveying system , not least what type of belt is will best suit the application. In this article Duncan Gornall of the UK based belt manufacturer Fenner Drives examines the popular belt alternatives available - assessing strengths...

COUPLINGS HELP CUT ENERGY COSTS
Mitsubishi Materials of Japan have solved a problem with a new Scherbius control system after installing rubber-in-compression couplings from Renold Hi-Tec Couplings of Halifax. Mitsubishi Materials installed new Scherbius control systems on two induced-draught fans at one of the company's cement works on the Japanese island of Honshu. The new system was intended to cut...
8. HOSPITAL SAVES THOUSANDS WITH NEW FILTER SOLUTION
Torbay Hospital recently approached maintenance specialist Wyko to find out if there was a viable alternative to an expensive method of removing wastewater from an area around fuel oil storage tanks, having the contaminated water removed by tankers could cost up to 220 Euros a week in wet weather until Wyko introduced an innovative new filtering solution. Had the water...
9. TO DIY OR NOT TO DIY, THAT IS THE QUESTION
Technical article : When off-the-shelf products can't satisfy the precision linear motion requirements of a project, there's a big temptation to produce a DIY design in house. However, this is not the best approach, says Philip Wallington of linear motion expert, Anorad. Precision linear motion is an essential element in many types of machine from graphics printers to a...
