Dear Reader,
The 25 th Motek exhibition takes place from 26 – 29. September this year. Over 900 companies will be represented, exhibiting more than 4,000 products. IEN Europe will of course be there too, and in our paper magazine we offer a special Motek Preview – you can read the introduction here.
In addition we have a special focus on Condition Monitoring. You might be interested in reading what Mark Raynes in Shell Lubricants has to say about lubrication management in the manufacturing industries. Werner Weber in Siemens offers his perspectives on self-diagnosis using the ePS Network Services.
As a newsletter exclusive, read on how TI Automotive has increased productivity and quality at their plant in Reynosa , Mexico , thanks to adopting a magnetic pulse welding system from Pulsar. |

Technology in Action
1. PLC IS LORD OF THE DANCE…
Passers by at the Yorkshire Dance Studio in Leeds are in for a surprise when they stop to admire the sculpture on the side of the building. Every 30 minutes, the sculpture suddenly comes to life, dancing across the façade. A tiny Mitsubishi PLC is the lord of the dance.
2. … BUT RODLESS PNEUMATIC CYLINDERS ARE DANCING TOO
For all the linear movements of the dancers, engineer-turned-sculptor Johnny White uses Hoerbiger-Origa rodless cylinders. – Hoerbiger Origa gave us a one-step engineering solution, he says.
3. REAL TIME MEASUREMENT OF PISTON DISPLACEMENT
One of Mahle Powertrain's recent internal research projects involved the use of Micro-Epsilon sensors to measure the displacement between the piston and the cylinder bore on a gasoline engine.
4. EASY ADJUSTMENTS THANKS TO QUICKPANEL CONTROL
Thanks to the use of a GE FANUC QuickPanel CE Control, Uteco's Mimstram laminating press can be easily and quickly adjusted to carry out a variety of applications. Claudio Sepremboni, a designer in Uteco's Electrical Technical department, explains.
5. ENERGY COSTS CUT WITH FREQUENCY CONTROLLED SCREW COMPRESSOR
Henrob, a world leader in self-pierce fastening technology, has realised a 16 per cent drop in energy costs over a period of just three months, thanks to a Boge SF-100-2 frequency controlled screw compressor.
6. MINI-ROBOTS RUN ON ALPHA DRIVE BELTS
The recently held Football World Cup 2006 presented challenging questions especially to the security forces. Amongst the tools used to secure the games were minirobots from RoboWatch Technologies. The ASENDRO Scout robots feature an Optibelt ALPHA drive belt.
7. SPECIAL PURPOSE JIB CRANE GIVES SAFE HANDLING
Brixworth Engineering, specialists in the design and manufacture of work handling equipment, have recently supplied a special purpose jib crane to BE Aerospace. This hydraulically powered unit was produced to comply with client specifications for the safe handling of total loads up to 750kg.
8. LINEAR SLIDES SIMPLIFY PRESSURE TESTER DESIGN
Pneumatically operated linear slides from Bosch Rexroth are simplifying the design and construction of a new pressure testing machine by Curtis Assemble & Test .
9. RING TRACK SYSTEM PUTS SHINE ON CERAMICS
Until last year the design that formed the basis of a Lippert special purpose interior glazing machine for sanitaryware resembled a Ferris wheel, and although relatively efficient it was unacceptably costly to build. A rethink was necessary, and that is how HepcoMotion 's PRT linear sections entered the equation.
NEWSLETTER EXCLUSIVE:
TI Automotive adopts magnetic pulse welding systems
Pulsar, a driving force in magnetic pulse solutions for manufacturing industries, announced today the installation of its MPW 25 magnetic
pulse welding system at the TI Automotive production plant in Reynosa , Mexico.
TI Automotive is a leading manufacturer of automotive heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as brake and fuel systems. TI Automotive will use Pulsar's MPW 25 system for welding 45mm receiver dryers - a component of an automotive HVAC system. The Pulsar MPW 25 machine replaces a MIG welder on a working line, and has increased production throughput to approximately 1000 parts per shift with much higher quality, dramatically lower scrap rate and no re-works.
- Replacing the existing MIG welder with the Pulsar MPW 25 machine was a straightforward process, Steve Taylor, Global Operations Manager for HVAC at TI Automotive, says. - We were able to plug the MPW 25 machine into a running production line with minimum adaptations. MPW 25 requires no special skills from our operators, keeping our production costs stable. The machine is producing thousands of parts every week, with an overall quality that exceeds our expectations. We see how Pulsar is fully committed to our success, which gives us a lot of confidence for the future
- We are pleased to see another major manufacturer using a Pulsar system to improve their production output, says Mr. Rani Plaut, CEO of Pulsar.
- In a short time, TI Automotive engineers adopted the MPW 25 process and were able to ramp up to full 24-hour production. We are delighted to note that TI is considering Pulsar as one of its 'processes of choice' for future products and projects and we are fully committed to their success.
