Dear Reader,
Hannover Messe is approaching fast and as usual, most of our team, same as our readers, go to Hannover. If you want to meet us, you will find our stand in hall 8. The stand number is F11. We will be looking forward to seeing you there.
In the April edition of IEN Europe, we have a special focus on Sensors, since the 15th edition of Sensor+Test is another important event for us. In the intro article, you can find out how tyre temperature sensors improve race car performance. In the Country Focus, you can familiarize yourself with the recent product novelties from Japan – the partner country of Hannover Messe 2008. In the intro you can read more about Japan’s presence in Hannover, this year. In addition, there are another nine Technology in Action articles that link to more extensive information on our website. As usual, IEN Europe brings you the latest products and solutions available in the market. Please read the issue online or visit www.ien.eu to search for products or manufacturers that interest you. |

Technology in Action
1. Operator panels help to turn wind into energy
The wind turbine provides clean and cheap electricity and the diesel generator secures the power for those moments when there is not enough wind. WES has been manufacturing wind turbines since late 2003. When introducing a new state-of-the-art control cabinet for their turbines, WES chose to equip it with operator panels from Beijer Electronics...
2. Linear slides over the rock generations
This reputation derives from Rotosound's careful choice of raw materials and the bespoke winding process that gives its strings their distinctive sound. The process itself is fundamentally the same today as it was when the current Chairman's father started the business in the '60s. Also unchanged is Rotosound's use of HepcoMotion linear slides to guide the cradle that carries the wire spool set...
3. Position transducers provide solutions for movies
With the high cost of delay and the complex schedules involved in the film industry, a very strong emphasis is placed upon equipment reliability and EMP Designs regularly choose Variohm Eurosensor for linear position and cable-extension transducers. In a typical filmed scene, several hydraulically actuated motion bases may be synchronised with CGI and movie cameras for carefully...
4. Gear units power hoists for Finland
Several large Flender FZG and Motox units have been specified for two steel industry hoist applications in Finland. Each 10-metre tall hoist contains a large FZG helical unit (size H4 HH15) with a 55kW 6-pole motor, plus a total of 13 Motox helical bevel geared motors in varying sizes (from KA88 to KA148), all fitted with eff1 motors. The hoists were designed by Flender drive system...
5. Keep it simple without a keeper
Field service and maintenance specialist CP Automation has announced a service and repair technique for DC drives, attached to permanent magnet motors, that is set to make in-house re-setting of the serviced drive a thing of the past. The technique dispenses with the use of a 'keeper', which normally acts as a substitute for the armature in the servicing procedure...
6. Hydro-pneumatic presses to the Assay Offices
Pryor Marking Technology , a specialist in marking and traceability solutions, today announced a contract to supply new hydro-pneumatic presses to the Assay Office London, one of four UK sites which independently tests and hallmarks jewellery and precious articles. The presses have been specifically designed and manufactured by Pryor's engraving department in response...
7. Improving efficiency with calibration workshop
The Patalganga plant has been utilizing several Beamex MCS100 Workstations for the last three years. Once installed and in use, the results have been very convincing and provided the opportunity to substantially improve the efficiency of calibration operations. "The average time it takes to do one pressure calibration has dropped from 2 hours to 30 minutes using the Beamex MCS100 system"...
8. Oven video inspection system slashes costs
The OvenScope video inspection system has been launched by McQueen Cairns Technology. Producing videos of the internal surfaces of continuous ovens as it passes along the conveyor, the system can bring huge cost savings by reducing unplanned maintenance and avoiding downtime due to oven fires and other major failures. The battery powered, PC based system can make up...
9. Robots speed up parts manufacturing
MSP, the precision turned parts manufacturer, has increased its production by 15% on a single shift after taking delivery of a Denso 4-axis machine-tending robot from AA Robotics. The robot loads and unloads components from pallets and holds them while sensors, which measure height and diameter, check their quality. The installation is part of a programme of investment which...
